To unlock the gate and make additional canastas, a canasta in 9s must be made by either player. Once one player has made a canasta in 9s, both players are then free to canasta what they wish, HOWEVER, if you make the canasta in 9s, you must wait until your next turn before you canasta anything else. DO NOT TOUCH THE PILE.
